This renewed commitment highlights the efforts of DAAR and other local organizations to make affordable housing a reality in the Loudoun area.
On Tuesday, April 20th, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors presented DAAR with the 2021 Fair Housing Month Proclamation. The document, signed by all nine members of the Board, will now be displayed proudly in DAAR’s office.
Every April, DAAR joins the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) in recognizing Fair Housing Month. Throughout this month, in commemoration of the Fair Housing Act of 1968, the Association facilitates educational opportunities and spearheads advocacy initiatives to shed light on housing discrimination. These efforts attempt to elucidate the complex problems that comprise such discrimination, including implicit bias, systemic racism, and the generational wealth gap.
DAAR’s receipt of the proclamation highlights the association’s renewed commitment to achieve affordable, accessible, and equitable housing opportunities for current and future residents of Loudoun County. It is also clear that DAAR is not alone in its fair housing efforts, for eleven other organizations were mentioned in the proclamation’s acknowledgement of local community partnerships.
Furthermore, due to COVID-19 restrictions, organizations were invited to send one representative each to attend the Board of Supervisors’ presentation of the proclamation. DAAR’s Government Affairs Director attended along with representatives from the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce, Legal Services of Northern Virginia, and St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church.
While the month of April may officially recognize fair housing efforts, DAAR understands that every month matters when it comes to making fair housing a reality in the area. This is why DAAR holds this proclamation in such high regard, for while it is a symbolic commemoration, it is just as equally a call for continued action to end housing discrimination in all its forms.
