Effective July 1st, 2017 Home Inspectors in VA must be Licensed

Where did this come from?

In 2015 and 2016, the Virginia General Assembly passed laws requiring the certification and licensure of Virginia home inspectors. Those requirements take effect THIS YEAR on July 1st.

What does it mean?

Effective July 1, if you recommend an unlicensed home inspector, YOU MAY BE LIABLE. Home inspectors with current certifications will automatically become licensed on July 1st; all other home inspectors are required to comply with state licensing requirements prior to the deadline.

What do you need to do?

1. Contact the home inspectors that you work with to verify their license status before the deadline.
2. Make sure that any inspections you have scheduled on or after July 1st are done by a licensed inspector. Find a list of current licensees here.
3. If you work with a home inspector who is NOT licensed, share the information on the state’s requirements  here.
