2021 Virginia Election Results: Statewide

From the Governor’s Mansion to the Office of the Attorney General, here is your 2021 election night results for Virginia’s statewide races:

On Tuesday, November 2, 2021, Virginia voters cast their ballots for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General and members of the General Assembly. At the end of the night, Virginians narrowly elected Glenn Youngkin, Winsome Sears and Jason Miyares to the Commonwealth’s three highest offices.

Democratic nominee and former Governor of Virginia, Terry McAuliffe, officially conceded to Youngkin the following morning. The election results were as follows: 

Virginia (Statewide Results)
Turnout: 55.2%

  • Governor: voting stickers

    • Glenn Youngkin (R) – 1,663,370 votes (50.59%)
    • Terry McAuliffe (D) – 1,599,097 votes (48.63%)
  • Lieutenant Governor: 
    • Winsome E. Sears (R) – 1,658,648 votes (50.72%)
    • Hala S. Ayala (D) – 1,607,955 votes (49.17%)
  • Attorney General: 
    • Jason S. Miyares (R) – 1,647,472 votes (50.36%)
    • Mark R. Herring (D) – 1,621,003 votes (49.55%)

* These results are considered “unofficial” by the Virginia Department of Election until the date of certification (November 15, 2021).
* Please note, the RPAC of Virginia Disbursement Trustees remained neutral in the statewide contests.

Voter turnout in the Commonwealth was just over 55%, the highest among the state’s recent gubernatorial elections. In Loudoun County, the turnout rate was even higher:

  • Governor:

    • Terry McAuliffe (D) – 89,397 votes (55.14%)
    • Glenn Youngkin (R) – 71,469 votes (44.08%) *

  • Lieutenant Governor: 
    • Hala S. Ayala (D) – 89,641 votes (55.29%)
    • Winsome E. Sears (R) – 71,275 votes (43.96%) *

  • Attorney General: 
    • Mark R. Herring (D) – 90,695 votes (55.94%)
    • Jason S. Miyares (R) – 70,351 votes (43.39%) *
      • *general election winner

With these victories came historic firsts for the state of Virginia. Winsome Sears will be the first woman to serve as lieutenant governor and the first woman of color to hold statewide office in Virginia. Jason Miyares will be the state’s first Latino attorney general.
